BUT THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE HAS POSTPONED THE SEASON…AGAIN…FOR THE SECOND TIME THIS YEAR. THERE’S SIMPLY TOO MANY WHALES FEEDING ON THE COAST TO MAKE IT SAFE TO USE CONVENTIONAL CRAB FISHING GEAR. AND WHILE VENDORS AND CRAB LOVERS ARE DEFINITELY FEELING THE IMPACT…FISHERMEN CONTINUE TO BE THE HARDEST HIT. THAT’S LEFT MANY FISHERMAN JADED AND PESSIMISTIC…SOME EVEN CHOOSING TO SKIP THIS YEAR’S CATCH ALTOGETHER. STILL…WITH A INDUSTRY AS LUCRATIVE AS THIS…AN UNDERLYING SENSE OF HOPE LINGERS. RESEARCHERS WILL REEVALUATE THE SITUATION EARLY DECEMBER AND THE EARLIEST THE MORATRIUM WILL BE LIFTED IS DECEMBER 16TH. THERE’S STILL A CHAN

Dungeness crab fishing season has been delayed on the Central Coast for the second time in 2022.On Monday, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife delayed commercial fishing of Dungeness crabs until at least Dec. 16.In their decision, the department cited whale entanglements from fishing gear as the reason for the delay. According to Oceana which is an nonprofit Ocean conservation group there were 15 confirmed whale entanglements in 2022. They sited statistics from the California department of fish and wildlife. Previously, the crabbing season was scheduled for Nov. 14.The delay covers the coast from Sonoma county to the Mexico border. The next review of the risk to whales is Dec. 4.
