yes the gold Globes airs weekdays and no one watches it, does it still matter? That was the question posed when the drunken cousin of the Oscars returned to television on Tuesday night after a year’s absence.

The awards ceremony, a source of income for the hollywood Foreign Press Association: a strange gang of international journalists from shadowy publications with loose ethics who to love asking celebrities for autographs and photos on press tours to the bewilderment of almost everyone else, was kicked off the air last year and only announced his awards via Twitter, rather embarrassingly, following a series of controversies from High profile.

Among these was an investigation that revealed that the HFPA had no black members; its former president Philip Berk vocation Black Lives Matter “a racist hate movement” and accused of Groping actor Brendan Fraserwho absented himself from this year’s ceremony in protest even though he was nominated for The whale; and comically brazen accusations of bribery, such as Netflix treating HFPA members to a luxurious vacation in paris for Emily in Paris that resulted in a string of Globes names for the often ridiculous series.

And now it’s back, proving that there is absolutely nothing that will prevent Hollywood from rewarding itself with a glitzy party of free drinks and snacks.

Broadcast live on nbc of the Beverly Hilton in Tony Beverly Hills, California, 1980sthe annual golden balloons were hosted by Jerrod Carmichaela super talented black comedian who recently appeared in his powerful stand-up special rothaniel.

During his opening monologue, Carmichael joked that he was “unexpendable” as the Globes’ first black host and confronted the organization. racism controversy, explaining the HFPA’s rationale for choosing him, and why he chose to take the mostly ungrateful job.

“Hello. Welcome to the 80’s.the Annual Golden Globe Awards. I am your host Jerrod Carmichael. And I’ll tell you why I’m here. I’m here because I’m black,” she began.

“This show, the Golden Globes, didn’t air last year because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which I won’t say was a racist organization, but they didn’t have a single black member until George Floyd died, so with that information whatever you want.”

After comparing himself to black FBI informants who spied on civil rights leaders in the 1960s, Carmichael ultimately said he took the hosting job because of his $500,000 paycheck and that “the industry deserves soirees as you are”, whatever that means.

That was mostly for Carmichael, barring some semi-funny interstitial jokes about how Rihanna should ignore the haters and take her damn time on that new album (the Queen attended with fellow A$AP Rocky), a Tom Cruise dig at the Scientologist for his performative display of the return of his Golden Globe trophies (who was not present, which tempered its impact), and a crack directed at Steven Spielberg about taking Kanye West to a screening of The Fabelmans and to make him change his whole perspective on Jews, as well as an incredibly risqué one that implies Will Smith is locked up, à la Rock Hudson. Carmichael, who is best known for his emotionally raw and insightful brand of comedy, stepped out of his comfort zone throughout the night and focused more on fostering a general sense of unease than stirring up trouble.

It was not without its pleasant moments. Jennifer Coolidge hilariously fumbling with her own reasoning to present before delivering a moving acceptance speech about making it big in midlife, and Colin Farrell cursing as he thanks his diminutive donkey co-star Jenny after winning Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical Movie. for The Banshees of Inisherin. michelle yeoh tearfully recounted her decades-long journey navigating Hollywood, and all the barriers she’s overcome, as she accepted the award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for Everything everywhere at once – before telling the Globes, “Shut up, please! I can hit you”, when they tried to play with her.

Another highlight of the show was the myriad of black actors who took home awards, including Best Supporting Actress for the legendary Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series (Abbott Elementary) to Tyler James Williams, Quinta Brunson winning Best Actress in a Television Musical/Comedy Series (Abbott Elementary), Zendaya for Best Actress on Television—Drama Series (Euphoria) and Brunson’s Abbott Elementary taking home Best Television Series Musical or Comedy. eddy murphy he also received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for Career Achievement. Although all of these winners were clearly serving, the Globes have a lot more work to do to make up for his racist past.

Meanwhile, fellow comedian Tracy Morgan introduced Murphy and proceeded to call out his “weak withdrawal game” for fathering ten children, eliciting some of the biggest laughs of the night. In a short acceptance speech, Murphy gave the audience three pieces of advice on how to get far in life.

“There is a definitive plan that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity and peace of mind. He is a model, and I have followed him my entire career,” Murphy said. “Pay your taxes, mind your own business, and keep the name of Will Smith’s wife out of your fucking mouth!”

Well played, sir. Ryan Murphy singled out LGBTQ+ artists like Billy Porter and MJ Rodriguez while receiving the Carol Burnett Television Achievement Award, calling them “examples of possibility,” and a teary-eyed Sean Penn appeared to introduce Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who interrupted the glamorous black-tie event to deliver a message to those watching from home about Russia’s war against Ukraine. (This is happening at almost every major award show now.)

“The war in Ukraine is not over yet, but the tide is turning. And it is already clear who will win, ”she said. “There are still battles and tears ahead, but now I can definitely tell you who was the best last year: it was you. The free people of the free world. Those who rallied around the support of the free Ukrainian people in our common struggle for freedom, democracy. For the right to live, to love”.

dragon house took home Best Television Series Drama, while Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin won Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and Autobiographical Drama for Steven Spielberg The Fabelmans received the award for Best Dramatic Film. In a graceful move, Spielberg yelled at all of the film’s PAs during his acceptance speech.

“I was a personal assistant to John Cassavetes on one of his movies,” Spielberg said. “I brought you coffee. I got them everything they wanted. I ran around that set, which was like a 16mm camera and a lot of noise, and whatever they wanted, I’d run out to delis and buy them stuff. And that’s why I treat my personal assistants with such kindness, because I know what it feels like.”

There was, of course, the aforementioned cloud hanging over the proceedings, and I’m not just referring to the HFPA’s racism controversies, or its bribery schemes, or the fact that it didn’t nominate any women in the category of Best Director (another one of his historical problems, and something McDonagh pointed out during his acceptance speech). I’m talking about brendan fraser.

As mentioned above, Fraser was left out of this year’s Golden Globes even though he was nominated for Best Actor for his career best performance in the film. The whale (lost with Elvis‘Austin Butler). In in the 2018 interview with QGFraser first spoke about forming the HFPA President Philip Berk groped him during an HFPA luncheon at the Beverly Hills Hotel in 2003.

“I felt sick. I felt like a little kid. I felt like there was a ball in my throat. I thought I was going to cry,” Fraser said. “I felt like someone had thrown invisible paint at me.” a “total fabrication”, while Fraser maintains that the HFPA framed it as a “joke” in a written apology).

fraser saying QG in November of last year that he would not attend this year’s Golden Globes if he was nominated for The Whale.

“I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association,” Fraser said. “No, I will not participate.”

And he added: “It is because of the history I have with them. And my mother did not raise a hypocrite. You can call me many things, but not that.

It would have been nice to see more (any?) actors and other members of the Hollywood community show solidarity with Fraser, or at least verify his name and why he was absent overnight. But Fraser’s ordeal went largely unmentioned.

Trends

Historically, the Golden Globes ceremony was a night of revelry: your favorite actors in flashy dresses and tuxedos would get on the drink and get roasted by the likes of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler or the more incendiary Ricky Gervais. The 2023 Golden Globes had none of that. The stars in the crowd and the presenters seemed nervous, even unsure why they were there in the first place. There were very few jokes that put these A-listers off (save for Regina Hall’s wonderful riff on winner Kevin Costner’s excuse for her absence, bless her), and even less memorable reaction shots. He ran almost 30 minutes of overtime. And Carmichael, as a host, not only failed to keep up the momentum, he also failed to address the HFPA’s long list of controversies intelligently. So if the Golden Globes are just going to be another boring awards show, what’s the point?

Maybe it’s time to let it die.
